Search planners do not find lost people, field search teams do. It is the job of of the search planner to help direct the field search teams to the most likely areas, so that they may efficiently find the subject. While many search assignments have particular destinations in mind (go search the summit of Smith Mountain), it is often useful to communicate assignments in terms of areas (go search the area within 500 feet of the summit of Smith Mountain).
A search area is defined as an area which encloses the entire search effort and a search segment is defined as a region within the search area. Both are discussed in detail in the articles in this section.
